Hilfenhaus shines as Chennai crush Delhi

In pursuit of a small target of 115, Chennai cruised there in 15.2 overs with the loss of Michael Hussey's wicket. Murali Vijay was unbeaten on 48 and Suresh Raina 28 not out and they took the side to victory.

This triumph has kept Chennai's hopes of making the play-offs alive. It was a dominant display by Chennai against the top side of this season's IPL.

The success here tonight took Chennai to fourth spot with 15 points from 14 games. Delhi are still on top of the points table with 18 points from 13 games.

At the half-time of this game, Chennai had virtually secured victory. It was due to a fine bowling effort from Ben Hilfenhaus that the Delhi's big bats were kept to just 114/5. Hilfenhaus collected his second successive Man-of-the-match award for his three wickets.

Chennai avenged their earlier loss to Delhi this season in same manner. On April 10, in Delhi, they had gone down to the Virender Sehwag-led side by eight wickets. It was a low-scorer then too. Chennai had collapsed to 110/8 and  Delhi chased with the loss of two wickets.

In Chennai's chase, Delhi's pacemen had to take early wickets to have any chance of defending this small total. However, Hussey and Vijay played with caution initially and later accelerated.

Delhi's strike bowler Morne Morkel went wicketless. The only success was achieved by Irfan Pathan when he removed Hussey in the 11th over. But it was too late. The opening stand had yielded 75 runs and put Chennai on track for an easy victory.

Delhi Daredevils Innings Report

The mighty Delhi Daredevils batting line-up was blown away by Chennai Super Kings bowlers as the visitors were strangled to a below par 114/5 in 20 overs. This was Delhi’s lowest total this season.

The defending champions, Chennai have to win tonight to keep their play-offs hopes alive and what a way to perform against the table toppers.

Chennai’s superlative bowling effort was triggered by Australia new ball bowler Ben Hilfenhaus when he removed the dangerous Delhi captain Virender Sehwag in the first over of the game.

Hilfenhaus added another major scalp by sending back his compatriot David Warner. In his third over, he dismissed wicketkeeper Naman Ojha and it was a terrific opening spell with the new cherry. The pitch had a bit of moisture and Hilfenhaus made use of it. His initial burst read 3-0-14-3. He returned to bowl the 19th over and his final returns were 3/27.

Delhi, having slipped into early trouble at 24/3 in five overs, were never allowed to claw back into the contest. Mahela Jayawardene too joined his top three batsmen in the pavilion with team score looking pathetic at 24/4 in 5.2 overs. Albie Morkel got the Sri Lankan captain.

Delhi’s top four batsmen had single digits. A mini-recovery was staged by Y Venugopal Rao and Yogesh Nagar. They associated for 48 runs off 48 balls for the fifth wicket. Nagar topscored with an unbeaten 43 while Venogopal had 27. Irfan Pathan contributed 13 not out. Delhi's lack of boundaries pushed them back. Only four boundaries and three sixes were scored by Delhi.

Morkel and Ravichandran Ashwin were also excellent. Morkel finished with 1/15 in four overs while Ashwin had one scalp for 17 runs off his quota of four overs.

Toss Report

Chennai Super Kings will bowl first after their captain MS Dhoni won the toss and opted to chase against Delhi Daredevils in Game 59 of IPL 5 here at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday night.

Chennai, who are in a must-win situation, made one change, bringing in left-arm spinner Shadab Jakati forYo Mahesh. Delhi made two changes. Shadab Nadeem and Andre Russell are out. Roelof van der Merwe and Umesh Yadav are in.
