Mercedes launches new C Class AMG at Rs.35 lakh

German luxury car-maker Mercedes-Benz launched the new C Class AMG Performance Edition and said it has lined up more compact premium cars as part of its aggressive growth plans for India. The C Class sedan is priced at Rs 34,62,609 ex-showroom in Mumbai.
"With the launch of the new C Class AMG Performance Edition, Mercedes-Benz aims to redefine the luxury entry level sedan segment. We are now looking at expanding through launching new products and increasing network penetration," Mercedes-Benz India Director (Sales & Marketing) Debashis Mitra told reporters here.
Mercedes was the top-selling luxury carmaker in India until it was overtaken by German rival BMW. Mercedes-Benz sold about 7,430 units last year and was the second-largest seller of high-end cars after BMW, which sold more than 9,400 cars.

During the January-April period, the company sold around 2,499 units, Mitra said.
The firm has identified three areas, namely launching new products, network penetration and new marketing initiative, to increase market share.
"India is an important market for us, where we see potential. We are looking at launching more next generation compact premium cars as part of a strategy to regain market share," Mitra said, adding it has lined up B Class cars, which will be launched in the next quarter.
The company last week launched its third generation M-Class SUV priced between Rs 56.9 lakh and Rs 66 lakh.
On expansion of distribution network, Mitra said, "We have already set up 60 touch points across the country and are looking at expanding the dealership network in the near future."
The company has decided to set up its own high-tech paint shop. The shop is likely to be operational by the second half of 2012 and will have an annual capacity of 20,000 units,Mitra said.
The paint shop carries "substantial investment" and takes Mercedes-Benz's total investment in its Chakan plant in Pune to more than Rs 600 crore, he said.
Going forward, the company sees huge potential in self leasing as part of car financing. The company is offering 'Star Lease', a self leasing option that allows consumers to drive a Mercedes-Benz without any initial investment.
Consumers would have to pay affordable rentals which shall cover insurance and maintenance costs for three years, Mitra said.

Tata Megapixel: The car of the future?

Tata Motors had presented the Tata Megapixel concept car at the 82nd Geneva Motor Show.
The Tata Megapixel is a four-seater range extended electric vehicle (REEV) concept. The car combines a lithium ion phosphate battery and an on-board petrol engine generator for recharging on the move.
The Tata Megapixel offers a range of up to 900 km (with a single tank of fuel), CO2 emission of 22 gm / km and fuel economy of 100 km / litre (under battery only power).

The car's electric drive has four independent electric motors, one at each wheel. When parking, the electric hub motors drive the wheels in opposite directions, while the front wheels are turned at an acute angle, enabling a 2.8 metre turning radius. The car can simply be parked over the induction pad for charging to begin.
A double-sliding door system and the car's B-pillar less design makes entry/exit easier. The Tata Megapixel can accommodate four adults with luggage.

Husqvarna Nuda 900R first ride

BMW Motorrad is the Munich-based automotive giant's motorcycle division. They picked up Husqvarna's motorcycle division in 2007, and today operate it as its own brand and operation.
Rewind a bit and the Husqvarna name is Swedish, an ammunition maker that began making motorcycles in 1903, became famous for its off-road motorcycles in the 50s and 60s and then dominated the world motocross scene until the 70s.
And in the still more recent past, they've stolen the march in the Supermoto world on competing brands as well. The motorcycle division was purchased by BMW from MV Agusta, in fact, who owned the brand (and in turn acquired it from Cagiva) and as a result, the Husqvarna motorcycles are actually based out of Varese in Italy now.

As rich as the heritage of the Husky (as it is affectionate called everywhere in the world, more or less) is in the off-road arena, what we are riding today isn't an offroad motorcycle. In fact, while Huskies of old (as in pre-WWII) were in fact road going, the brand's name was made by their off-roaders. The Nuda, then is a break from tradition and a road bike.
The engine was sourced from BMW, from the F800 series of 800cc parallel twins and then the Husky engineers tuned it. They increased the compression, raised the bore as well as stroke and fiddled and tuned until they came up with this a 900cc fuel-injected, liquid-cooled parallel twin making 100Nm of torque as well as 105PS of power. In today's age of 200PS motorcycles that doesn't sound like much, we know.
But when you lay a fat, thick darkie through two gears coming out of a u-turn you learn that on most motorcycles, 105PS is a front wheel in the air and rear wheel smoking slightly at the same time if you are ham fisted enough. That said, once you get used to it, the Nuda is quite the charmer. The engine sounds mellow, large-hearted and throaty at idle and a harder edge and quicker revs can be released by using the first (the sportier) of two engine maps.
In the normal mode (the MAP1 indication on the digital display goes off), the motorcycle is distinctly sweeter in nature and response and feels more fluid and smooth. But pull on the throttle and she responds with an instant lunge forward that will have you shifting up as quickly as you can to keep up. The Nuda enjoys a good mid range so once you get used to its engine and power, you will find yourself shifting up a bit before you actually hit the redline, and mostly, even peak power.
That lovely engine is matched to a trellis frame with an adjustable USD Sachs fork up front with radial mounted Brembo monobloc calipers and an Ohlins adjustable rear shock with a piggyback reservoir. All this makes the Nuda a 175kg (dry) welterweight. It feels very slim for a twin between the legs and is long and tall in initial feel like a dirt bike.
It is a stiff motorcycle but it also has relatively long travel suspension so bumps are absorbed better than almost any imported sports motorcycle you'd care to name. In the corners, the Husky is stable - something dirt bike-based road bikes find hard to do on longer, faster corners - and in the sharper turns, flicks quickly from side to side which is very impressive.
Match all that to a wide, leverage-happy handlebar and you have a recipe for an indefatigable way to commute to work, blast up and down the twisties and on occassion even try the highway tour (as in live with the tank range and the wind blast).
The Nuda (as in without the R, the base version) gets lower spec equipment - non-adjustable shocks, a softer sear that is also lower, a lower spec Brembo brake and stuff. So while I, 6' in boots, got only my toes down on the Nuda R, I've read repeatedly that the Nuda is a bit easier on the lower slung. And definitely easier on the wallet.
Ah yes, the money bit. Huskies will be sold exclusively through Navnit Motors, who also distribute BMW motorcycles in India. They currently have outlets in Mumbai and Bangalore. The brand is to be represented by the Nuda and the Nuda R for now because the rest of the (amazing) range falls under the 800cc bracket and requires full homologation.
As of now, official word is that there is no plan on either BMW or Husqvarna's part for an Indian anything but CBU operation. And it's the fact that the Huskies are coming in through this route that makes them so expensive. Navnit indicates that the final prices are under discussion but are likely to fall in the Rs 12-14 lakh bracket.

Mercedes-Benz launches new M-Class in India

German luxury car maker Mercedes-Benz Tuesday launched its third generation sports utility vehicle M-Class priced at Rs.56.9 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
"At the start of this year, we had promised to introduce exciting new models into the market. We are proud to present today the new M-Class," Peter Honegg, managing director and chief executive, Mercedes-Benz, said.
"We are confident that the quality drive and the luxurious experience it can deliver will be a big hit with the customers and it will be warmly received," he said.

The off-roader comes with technologies such as customised settings for engine performance, automatic transmission, anti-lock braking system, electronic stability programme and electronic traction system.
The company has so far sold 1,500 units of the vehicle, launched in 2008, in the country. The latest model has a price cut of nearly 15 per cent from its previous editions and will take on BMW X5 and Audi Q5.
Another variant of the new vehicle, the AMG edition of 100 units, priced at Rs.66 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) was completely sold off through pre-bookings even before the launch.
According to Honegg, the company expects a boost in sales after the launch of compact segment brands such as A-Class and B-Class enters the market. He, however, did not divulge any price details or the launch time of the vehicles.
"We expect to become number luxury sellers of luxury cars in India by 2020, the growth will get a boost when the compact models enter the Indian market," he said.
The company sold around 7,500 units in 2011, which was a growth of 30 per cent over 2010, but in 2012, it expects to grow at a much slower pace of 20 per cent due to the existing market environment.
Mercedes-Benz was the second-largest luxury car seller in 2011 with sales of around 7,500 units. The market was led by BMW with sales of over 9,400 cars. Audi was the third-largest seller with 5,511 units

Honda launches 'Dream Yuga'; HMSI to rope in Akshay Kumar

Honda Motor Co launched its first mass-market motorcycle for India and its cheapest motorbike worldwide on Tuesday, as it aims to tap low-cost emerging markets including more than doubling India's share of its motorcycle revenue by 2020.

Honda, which ended a 26-year joint venture with India's Hero MotoCorp in March of last year in an $851 million deal, has announced fresh investment worth 20 billion rupees ($373 million) since then as it looks to chase down its former partner, the current market leader.

Honda's 110cc Dream Yuga motorcycle, its first in India's 75-125cc commuter segment, will start at 44,642 rupees ($830) and will compete with Hero's Splendor brand, India's biggest-selling bike.

The company's wholly-owned subsidiary Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) also announced to rope in bollywood actor Akshay Kumar as a brand ambassador for the company.

Honda expects India to account for 30 percent of its global motorcycle revenues by 2020, up from 13 percent currently, said Keita Muramatsu, president of Honda Motorycle & Scooter India at the bike's launch in New Delhi.

"Our long-term target is to be the number one in India by 2020," said Yadvinder Singh Guleria, marketing head for Honda India. He said the company targets sales of 300,000 Dream Yugas in the current financial year that ends in March 2013.

Entry-level commuter bikes account for around 70 percent of the domestic market in a country that sold over 10 million bikes in the last financial year, second only to China.

Under the joint venture agreement, Honda was banned from directly competing with Hero Honda vehicles.

Honda's foray into the mass-market arena is part of a larger assault by Japanese motorcycle makers ramping up capacity and targeting volumes in a market that grew 14 percent in the 12 months to March 2012.

Yamaha Motor Co this week announced a new $280 million factory in India to almost triple capacity to 2.8 million motorcycles by 2018, while Suzuki Motor Corp, which will likely launch a mass-market offering this month, is building a new factory to take its India capacity to close to 1 million motorcycles by 2014.

Local rivals are taking note. Bajaj Auto, India's Number 2 but beaten into third place in March by Honda, launched a souped-up version of its flagship commuter bike, the Discover, on Monday.

Honda sold 220,487 two-wheelers in India in March, 50 percent more than in the same month last year, and marginally more than Bajaj.

The Japanese company, which also sells passenger cars in India, is currently constructing its third two-wheeler factory in the country. The new plant is expected to begin production early next year and take total capacity to 4 million two-wheelers.

Mercedes-Benz plans to assemble models like GL class, B Class, A class to regain market share in India

In a bid to regain lost market share in India, Mercedes-Benz plans to assemble 8-9 models over the next few years, a move that would help it save on steep import duty and price its products more aggressively.
"We are going to change the rules of the game in the next three years with our CKD lines," said Peter Honegg, MD & CEO of Mercedes Benz India. The German premium carmaker on Tuesday launched the third generation ML class at 56.90 lakh. The company already assembles C, E and S class cars at its Chakan plant.
While imported cars attract 110% duty, those assembled in India are levied a lower import duty of up to 30%.
Over the next few years, Mercedes-Benz has lined up a slew of cars that it will assemble in India such as GL class, followed by B Class, A class and GLC class. The luxury carmaker is also investing Rs 350 crore in setting up assembly lines and the paint shop.
The company is aiming to sell 500 ML class this year and has already got over 100 bookings, said Honegg.
While the Stuttgart-based carmaker has lost out to Audi as the second-largest player in the country, Honegg says Mercedes-Benz is aiming for profitable growth in India.
In 2011, BMW was the No.1 player in the premium and luxury car segment in India, with sales of over 9,400 units, followed by Mercedes-Benz at 7,430 and Audi at 5,511 units.

American Talk-Show Host Jay Leno Took To Tata Nano

Jay Leno, the famous stand-up comedian and talk show host from America recently took a dip in the pool of Bollywood and all of it was made possible by a set of wheels. This TV celebrity is known for his collection of desirable automobiles which spans over vintage cars, super cars and tailor made cars; the newest addition to the collection of this renowned car lover is the modest small car Tata Nano. Leno followed the Bollywood in its truest style; he joined his hands like it’s done in India for Namaskar and posed in front of his white Nano with a background of National Flag of India.
Accentuating the Bollywood flavor of the entire scene were Indian dancers tripping the light fantastic toe in shiny lehengas. However, the cynosure of all eyes was Jay Leno who was dressed in a Sherwani; once again he pulled off a perfect mix of spoof and homage which only he is capable of. As reported the entire affair was desi at heart with dancers shaking a leg on the Bollywood music as the Tata Nano flaunting tri-color stripes took the centre stage in his garage. Leno also bowed in the front of Nano gesturing the traditional Namaskar.
Leno’s Big Dog Garage shelters around 200 cars and 90 motorcycles; he also customizes and restores cars as he dives into exploring automotive adventures every week. And this week, Nano, the cheapest car of the world from the Indian auto maker Tata Motors caught his attention. Jibes on his different attire were flooding Leno’s Facebook and Twitter pages and someone stated in a post that this is the first time Jay has been spotted wearing something different than his typical denim shirts.

Schumacher handed Monaco grid penalty

Michael Schumacher will lose five places on the starting grid for the Monaco Grand Prix following his crash with Bruno Senna in Spain.
The Mercedes driver crashed into the back of the Williams when fighting for position at the end of the straight on lap 13, with both drivers retiring.
The stewards deemed the seven-time champion was to blame for having caused the collision and he will be dropped five places on the starting grid at Monaco.
Schumacher believed the accident had been Senna's fault.
"I just took a minute to watch the video and if you look at the overhead shot you can see that he moves right to defend his inside position, but in the braking phase he moves back left right in front of me," said Schumacher.
"Then I tried to avoid to the inside again, but too late. Then it's done because that's in the braking phase. Very frustrating. Very much annoyed about that."

Renault launches Pulse petrol variant

Barely four months after the diesel fuelled Pulse hatchback was launched, Renault India has launched the petrol variant. The Pulse petrol is being offered in three trim levels and six colours – RxE (Rs 4.25 lakh), RxL (Rs 4.99 lakh) and RxZ (Rs 5.55 lakh), ex-showroom Delhi.
It is powered by an inline 1198cc, 3-cylinder engine which makes 76PS of power and 104Nm of torque, same as the Nissan Micra. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. Renault claims that the Pulse will deliver a fuel efficiency of 18.03kmpl.
All Pulse petrol trims get 14 inch wheels as standard and the base RxE trim gets a driver airbag, electronic power steering, central locking, air conditioning, follow-me headlamps while only the top-end RxZ has dual airbags and ABS with EBD apart from automatic climate control, smart access key, engine start/stop button and rear defogger with timer.

BMW F650GS launch imminent in India - Costs about - Rs.9.99 Lakhs only

BMW Motorrad is bringing in their on-off road-styled F650GS to India this May with an introductory price of Rs 9.99 lakh, ex-showroom.
The price is expected to go up to Rs 12 lakh after three months. The engine is a fuel-injected 800cc parallel twin which has a power output of 72PS and peak torque of 75Nm - figures comparable to the Kawasaki Ninja 650R.
A 6-speed gearbox handles the transmission duties. The F650 name is familiar to us thanks to the eponymous Funduro that BMW launched here ages ago in association with Hero, though its price tag was well ahead of its time.
BMW motorcycles have come to India with Navnit Motors as their exclusive dealer and have been so far, selling a range of motorcycles including the two icons of the brand, the S1000RR sportsbike and the original giant transcontinenal off-roader, the R1200GS.
The achilles heel has been pricing - both the icons cost nearly Rs 20 lakh. BMW will see increased sales from this vastly more affordable motorcycle although the pricing when compared to its displacement peers remains on the high side. BMW is currently the sole Indian CBU motorcycle outfit without direct Indian representation. BMW currently has dealers in Mumbai and Bangalore.

Honda CBR150R first impressions

We have just received our test CBR150R and here is everything you need to know about the motorcycle
Is this a mini-CBR250R, then?
Well, yes and no. Under the skin the relation between the 150 and the 250 is weak. They share only the most basic of components but little else. The engines are both DOHC 4-valve units but they are completely different. Similarly where the CBR250R uses a trellis type diamond frame, the 150 uses a steel twin spar frame. The similarities then, are most visual.

The body panels look similar to each other though the 150 looks skinnier, trimmer and therefore more muscular and svelte. The meters are nearly identical though the CBR150R does not get the silver trim and ends up looking cheaper. Stunner-style switchgear (no engine kill or day flash) makes the bike look and feel a bit cheap.
Also in the same why-oh-why set is the shiny black finish of the twin spars. That aside though, it is a proper Honda. Which means glossy paint, panels that fit neatly and a motorcycle that feels solid. Strangely enough though, the mirror mounts are loose on our bike, just like our long termer used to have.
17.82PS makes this a rocking motorcycle, no?
Erm, it isn't that straight forward unfortunately. The torque peak is high (12.66Nm at 8500rpm), the engine is over square and peak power - 17.82PS - sits at a lofty 10,500, a full 2000rpm higher than the R15. This makes the motorcycle rev hungry - which in my book isn't always a bad thing. However, in traffic, the specs don't seem to pan out. We haven't tested the motorcycle for performance just yet, but the CBR feels less responsive than the R15 in traffic and even when revved to the moon, performance seems a bit less than expected.
This is even more strange when you consider that the motorcycle weighs 136kg, exactly the same as the R15. However, one trusted source who happened to put in a couple of laps at the Kari Motor Speedway suggested that the motorcycle does okay at the racetrack, but only if the revs are kept up high all the time.
Cornering?
This is the sort of ride quality and handling balance that I would have liked to have seen on the CBR250R, to be honest. It appears almost as if Honda have put the 250's suspension on the 150 and the lighter weight of the 150 allows the settings to really shine.
Ride quality is well damped and on the sporty side but immensely likeable and the motorcycle feels noticeably heavier in side to side transitions than the R15 or the Duke 200 but feels neutral, confident and poised.
The Zappers on the bike, though, feel like harder compound tyres than the Yamaha or the KTM - which is good for longevity, but not for cornering grip. It feels compact, purposeful and therefore, very nice.
So what is it exactly?
I think the CBR is a bit odd, that's my initial assessment of it. It's a high quality motorcycle, one that will make a very good commuter. The odd bit is that in there is a high revving engine that doesn't like low revs even more intensely than the R15. I'm hoping that over a longer term of riding, this impression will change and clear up.
Hey what about the price?
Oh yes, Honda have priced the motorcycle at approximately Rs 3,000 more than the KTM 200 Duke in Mumbai for the base variant, the Deluxe being another Rs 1,000 on top (the stickering in the bike above is the Deluxe bit). This means a premium of roughly Rs 10,000 over the
