Apple drops 4G moniker from new iPad, goes 'Cellular'

Apple has dropped the 4G moniker from the new iPad and replaced it with a simple 'Cellular'. The move is being seen as a response to criticism, and indeed regulatory pressure, that Apple has received outside US and Canada due to incompatibility of the new iPad's 4G chip with local 4G networks.

Australia and UK are amongst the countries that had criticised Apple's decision to sell the new iPad with 4G branding despite the incompatibility which means it works in 3G mode. Apple even offered refund to customers in Australia who felt misled by the claims.

The new iPad went on sale in US and 9 other countries on March 11 and clocked over three million sales over the opening weekend. It is now available in over 85 countries around the globe, with China the only major market where it is yet to go on sale.
