Superstar Aamir Khan today met with Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot to discuss his plea for the speedy trial of female foeticide cases highlighted on his new TV show Satyamev Jayate.
Mr Gehlot has agreed to Aamir's request of a fast track court to resolve all pending cases. Mr Gehlot and Mr Khan addressed the press together after their meeting.
The first episode of Satyamev Jayate, which aired on Sunday (May 8), featured the story of a sting operation conducted seven years ago by two Jaipur based journalists to expose increasing female foeticide cases in four states - Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
After the expose, the Rajasthan government had come down heavily on doctors who were involved in sex determination tests and abortions and had started a probe against them. Since then, the doctors have neither been promoted nor cleared of the charges.
On his show, Mr Khan said that he would appeal to the Rajasthan Chief Minister to get the cases against the doctors clubbed together and tried in a fast track court. He also appealed to viewers to support his signature campaign.
Mr Khan has said that as an entertainer he can help bring attantion to issues. He will not focus just on female foeticide but will explore 13 different issues on Satyamev Jayate.
He also said that individual attitudes need to change before administrative changes can be made: "I want every Indian to see the show and say - I will not do this wrong...or allow anyone else in my family to do this wrong."
Chief Minister Gehlot on Tuesday tweeted: "Satyamev Jayate is a great and extra ordinary initiative to root out female foeticide. I am eager to have a fruitful dialogue with Aamir on May 9."
Rajasthan has been in the news for increasing cases of female foeticide and female infanticide. According to Census 2011, Rajasthan has 883 girls between the age of 0-6 for every 1,000 boys.
Alarmed over the state's skewed sex ratio, the state government recently announced steps to curb pre-natal sex determination tests at ultrasound clinics.
